Lent & Fasting

In the spirit of lent we are reminded to fast. In Joel we see this “Yet even now,” declares the Lord, “return to me with all your heart, with fasting, with weeping, and with mourning". Fasting over the years has evolved into giving up something whereas in the past it meant giving up food. It was an intentional way of seeking God with a sense of awareness you probably wouldn't have had if you did not lack something as essential as food.

During a fast the time designated for eating would be devoted to prayer, weeping to God to forgive us and perhaps mourning for what has been lost because of sin. The wages of sin is death and you don't have to die physically to experience loss. Every time you sin you harm yourself and/or others in the process. Sin does not bring forth life, it destroys and hence the analogy that the wages of sin is death.

Lent III

You turned back so what did you turn to?
After turning back from sin the call is to turn  to God and to walk in obedience. Turning from something will often require turning to something. Its a quid pro quo relationship sort of thing. You are giving up something to gain something.

In this instance I would wager we gain so much more by turning to God. Joel 2:13 and rend your hearts and not your garments.”Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.

Lent II

Lent and repentance go hand in hand don't you think? In Lent I we see the importance of Lent and how we should be intentional about it. The call to ask God for forgiveness especially during this season. Asking for forgiveness is a difficult task. It involves humility. It's recognizing and accepting that we are not perfect Christians. It's seeing ourselves from God's point of view. Now notice I didn't say our point of view or any other person's point of view.

Hi folks I hope you are having a good week so far. I'll get right to it this morning, how has your lent been going? Have you even thought about it? How does lent look like for you?

As a person who was brought up in the church lent has been sort of like a norm. Sort of like Christmas, which makes me sad. The season of lent is the foundation of our faith. The Crucifixion of Jesus is what its all about. Without redemption we would be lost and the likelihood of being found non-existent.

He Who Begun A Good Work Will Be Faithful To Complete It

I read a devotional a few weeks ago that I have been planning to share but just haven't gotten around to it. The writer of the devotion is Missy Fuller and this post is inspired by her thoughts. Below is a quote of what she wrote concerning the way God thinks of us.

"When things feel helpless and desperate, God has a plan. When we’re convinced our story is over, God is at work. When we’re exhausted and confused, God is sovereign. When one more horrible, unexplainable thing happens, God has a purpose. When we’ve truly lost all hope, God is bringing about His will".

"It's Not You" - Then What's The Problem?

What a week folks? I have been super busy at work and I am looking forward to a long weekend. Thank you Presidents day!!! It's super cold in Boston (sub-zero degree weather) and if you ain't got yourself a honey then you better get yourself some hot chocolate : ).

I don't have plans for this lovely weekend (pun intended) so I am staying in and enjoying a quiet weekend no valentine shenanigans. Although in one of my previous blogs I did state that its always nice to go out and enjoy yourself, sometimes you need some quiet time just as much. It's good for the soul : ).

You Are Not That Into Them

People think it takes a lot to know whether you are into someone or not but the thing is its not rocket science. It really isn't! There are some tell tale signs that make it obvious you either need to walk away or maybe down grade the relationship.

  1. The first thing is that stuff that should bother you doesn't. Has someone ever done something so foul but you don't find yourself mad or angry? You are pretty much indifferent. I mean you care but not enough. It's like you have an ignore button for them and things just don't get to you.

5 Things To Do On Valentines

Good morning everybody I hope you had a great weekend. I know I did! Superbowl 50 champs right here : ). Anyways as we get into a new week it occurred to me this morning that its valentines weekend.

I know some of you are probably rolling your eyes but hey I like valentines day, its an excuse to spend a ridiculous amount of money and to be pampered. I am all about that in the name of love of course haha. I also think that because people purposefully set this time apart, it gives couples an opportunity to reconnect, have good conversations and enjoy each others company at least more than they usually do (hopefully : ) ).

Why Do You Like Me?

I was listening to the radio the other day and apparently there was a study and the conclusion was that parents should tell their kids they like them. Note I didn't say love them but rather like them. I was like whaaat?! First I'm thinking another study?! Second I think to myself maybe there is something to this. The show host talked about a father telling his ten year old daughter he liked her and after a little while, she was probably processing that information she asked, "Why?"

Let Go And Let God

Matthew 6:34 says Therefore do not be anxious about tomorrow, for tomorrow will be anxious for itself. Sufficient for the day is its own trouble.

Do you ever worry about things? You would have to be like the freaking Dalai Lama if you didn't. We all worry about the same things at the end of the day. We all have the same problems regardless of where we come from. We worry about money, our families, school, the future, you name it. As long as you are alive you are prone to worrying.

Seeking First

If you grew up in church then I'm sure you've heard the verse that's says 'Seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness and all these things shall be added unto you'. What does that mean or what does that look like? How can you seek the kingdom of God first? What is the kingdom of God?

All these questions!!! The answers are diverse and convoluted and they will be different depending on who your pastor is. So I asked myself a different question, what do I want to be added to my life? What are the things that I value the most, that I want to get as a result of my seeking. Because the thing is whatever it is that I want the most will influence how I do my seeking.

You Are Your Biggest Competition

Today I wanted to end the week on a high note. I've been crazy busy at work but I can't complain. Did I mention that I got a promotion this year?! Hello!!! Bless the Lord oh my soul is right. I came back from vacation and getting this news was absolutely wonderful. I kept it on the low low because as happy as I am, I am realizing that my job is not the focal point of my life.

Two Weeks In Europe For Less Than $2,500

This amount may seem high for some people, but not everyone is a backpacker and I like certain comforts when I travel. That said I am also not one of those people who will spend an outrageous amount of money for something because people hype it. There is nothing wrong with backpacking but I work hard to ensure that when I travel I have as much comfort as I can afford. (If you are viewing the post in the mobile version, it may be easier to use the web version below because of the tables I used. Please scroll down and select 'web version'. Thanks for reading.)

Going in to planning for Europe I had a budget of $2,000 but the thing with most budgets is that they are hard to stick to. However $2,500 for two weeks now that is something you can't beat especially in Europe where you 'lose' money because of the exchange rate. This budget is based on two people. So for hotels and things like that we split everything down the middle.
