Thanksgiving For Our Blessings In Disguise

Thanksgiving is around the corner and I think its the perfect time to take stock and ask yourself what are you most grateful for. The year is ending and all those resolutions you had at the beginning of the  year must seem like they were from another era unless you are among the few that actually followed through. Resolutions are good because they mean you are intentional about the things you want to do but I also think that we should adopt lifestyles in our lives. Resolutions don't defines us, lifestyles do.

Thinking of 2015 makes me cringe a little. Where did the time go folks? I had all these big plans and now all I can do is laugh. There is a verse in the bible that goes something like man makes plans but God directs our steps. I like this version Proverbs 16:9 A man’s mind plans his way, but the Lord directs his steps and makes them sure. Have you found yourself in situations where you think 'If it wasn't for God I don't know where I would be' because you had nothing to do with the place you find yourself and the wonderful outcome had nothing to do with your carefully laid out plans.

It's funny how things happen this way. If you are finding yourself in a happy place in your life where you can't pinpoint exactly what you did to deserve it but you know you are blessed, then say thank you and walk away humbled knowing if it were up to you, you would probably not be in that place. I think of things that come our way that initially look like a hot mess but are usually blessings in disguise.

Think of the job that didn't work out but that led to you going to a place where you had to start over and you have flourished and are much happier. A relationship that didn't work out but that led to you dating someone new who turned out to be your soulmate. A baby that you hadn't planned on but looking back you don't know how life was before them. Think of the messy things in your life that have led to your happy place. The happy place you had not planned for when you made your new year resolutions. Then take a minute to thank God.

Now if you are one of those people who followed through on your plans take a minute to give yourself a pat on the back. If you lost weight, graduated, got married, traveled whatever it is you planned and accomplished congratulate yourself and give thanks. As we go through this season of thanksgiving take stock, take pride in your accomplishments, challenge yourself where you need to and last but not least give thanks.

Listening is loving...
